Todd Phillips' Joker Origin Movie May Have Found Its Star

Last year, it was reported that in addition to keeping the DC Extended Universe going, DC and Warner Bros was forming a new DC films banner that would tell standalone stories set outside of the established shared universe. The first of these movies would revolve around Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker, and now there's word that Joaquin Phoenix is being eyed to play the Clown Prince of Crime in this project.

War Dogs' Todd Phillips is co-writing and directing this Joker origin story movie, and according to Variety, Joaquin Phoenix is Phillips' top choice to don the purple suit. Official negotiations haven't begun, but supposedly Phoenix has agreed to the role, as he and Phillips met right before 2018 began. Now the ball is in Warner Bros' court over whether or not Phoenix will be the latest actor to bring The Joker to life.

This isn't the first time that Joaquin Phoenix has been been courted for a comic book movie. The actor known for his work in Walk the Line, The Master and Her (among others) was also considered to play Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange, but he passed on both roles. However, assuming this new report is correct, it sounds like Phoenix is all on board to play The Joker, and looking at his body of work over the years, he certainly has the talent to effectively ooze this DC villain's brand of crazy. Leonardo DiCaprio was previously rumored to be a candidate to play The Joker in this movie, but Phoenix would be just as good of a score, if not more so. In the DC Extended Universe, Jared Leto is playing The Joker, who was introduced in Suicide Squad and is expected to return for Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens and the Joker/Harley Quinn movie.

Rather than fit into the traditional superhero movie mold, this Joker movie is reportedly being envisioned as a crime drama set in 1980s Gotham City. Shortly after the initial announcement of this project came out, it was also rumored that the movie would depict the person who will become Joker as a kid who is made fun of because of his permanent smile. If that's true, then presumably we would only see this young man either at the beginning of the movie or through flashbacks, while the main story would revolve around his life in the "present day" and how he became one of Gotham City's most dangerous criminals. It's unclear how or even if Batman will fit into this Joker movie. Todd Phillips is working on the script with 8 Mile's Scott Silver.

It's almost hard to believe, but Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for nearly two months. Anticipation for The Russo Brothers' blockbuster was at a fever pitch when it arrived in April, especially given the wild events of Infinity War before it. But the co-directors delivered on all their promises, and crafted an unpredictable movie that was begging to be re-watched on the big screen.

Moviegoers did just that, experiencing the Time Heist and insane final battle more than once. What resulted was massive box office numbers, with Endgame sitting just below Avatar for the highest grossing movie of all time. And now Kevin Feige was revealed the way that record could be toppled: by re-releasing a new cut of Endgame in theaters, complete with new footage. He recently revealed this, saying:

We are doing that. I don't know if it's been announced. And I don't know how much... Yeah, we're doing it next weekend

Honestly, just take my money. Disney's handling of the MCU has been pretty flawless throughout Phase Three, and now the House of Mouse pulled out another trick, in the form of an extended cut of Avengers: Endgame.

Kevin Feige revealed the plans for Endgame's second release to Comic Book, while doing press for Spider-Man: Far From Home. While somewhat shocking, it's a revelation that makes sound business sense. And it's not like there isn't plenty of footage that ended up on the cutting room floor of the 181-minute epic.

The Russo Brothers shot Infinity War and Endgame back to back, and shot a ton of material that never actually made it into the theatrical cut. The editing process is key to any release, but especially such a complicated and crossover-heavy story like Endgame. There's 900 hours of footage to comb through, although smart money says the new cut will include deleted scenes that almost made it into the final film.

A new cut of Avengers: Endgame guarantees the hardcore fandom will be flocking back to theaters, to see what Marvel Studios cooked up this time. It's a great placeholder to satiate moviegoers until the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and will also give Endgame the final box office boost it needs. The 22nd MCU installment is around $40 million behind James Cameron's Avatar, so the re-release is coming at a perfect time.

News of the new Avengers: Endgame release is sure to excite the hardcore fandom, and it should be fascinating to see what new footage gets added to the blockbuster. Smart money says the final battle will be extended, as there's probably even more action that didn't make it into the film. Maybe we'll finally see Kraglin? But overall the movie goes so many places, that any of its three acts has room for expansion. We'll just have to see when that new version of the blockbuster makes it to theaters.

Avengers: Endgame is still in theaters now, although Kevin Feige indicated the re-release might be arriving as soon as next week. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The Big Way The Black Order Changed From The Comics In Avengers: Infinity War

In his lifelong quest to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos has some nice help from the group known as the Black Order in Avengers: Infinity War -- though comic book fans might recognize some slight changes from the source material. Specifically, all four members are toned down a bit in terms of their abilities -- allowing them to be more manageable opponents. This may seem like a strange move for a blockbuster with some seriously extreme stakes, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently told me why they made those choices. Said Joe Russo,

This is our interpretation of the Black Order as fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They are not as all powerful as they are in the comics. We didn't want them overshadowing Thanos. They're minions who are as powerful and more powerful than Gamora and Nebula. They sort of fit into that world of orphans that have been retconned by Thanos as he destroys half the population of planets, going around conquering planets around the universe.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown, filmmakers have understood the need to divert from the source material in certain ways, and the creation of the live-action Black Order is one perfect example. I had the pleasure of talking about the group with Joe and Anthony Russo during the Los Angeles press junket for Avengers: Infinity War last month, and it was during that conversation I learned about their logical approach -- not wanting to make the Children of Thanos as significant a threat as their leader, as a means of making the Mad Titan stand out more as a specific threat.

The Black Order was a group created by Jonathan Hickman, Jerome Opea and Jim Cheung during the 2013 Infinity crossover event, introducing Marvel fans to the Infinity Stone-collecting unit including Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw and Black Dwarf. In Avengers: Infinity War they put up an extremely tough fight against the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, and definitely represent serious opponents to the heroes, but nothing quite on the level of Thanos. And obviously this makes plenty of sense, as while they are meant to be threats, they are also supposed to just be stepping stones up to the big bad.

It's also worth noting that the third Avengers film doesn't spend a great deal of time explaining who the Black Order is -- but there's a good reason for that too: there just isn't a whole lot of time in the narrative. When I specifically asked about Corvus Glaive's glaive and how it's presented in the comics (it makes him immortal unless it's broken), Joe Russo explained,

It's powerful, you'll see its power in the film, but we couldn't get into it two and a half hours - with 23 heroes on the poster. It wasn't a priority for us to get into the backstory of the Black Order. You get tidbits about them as you watch the film, and there's some implied relationships between some of those characters, but nothing that would detract from story real estate.

When all is said and done, the Black Order isn't the most well-defined group of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but at the same time they certainly do add a lot to the crazy pressure facing the heroes in Avengers: Infinity War. Deadpool 2's PG-13 Cut Has A Title And It's Perfect

Deadpool 2 already had its time in theaters during the summer, and once the sequel was released on home media in August, we figured that was the end of its journey. However, it was announced last month that a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 would hit the big screen in December, and now we finally know what that this cut of the movie will be fittingly called Once Upon a Deadpool.

It had initially been reported that this new version of Deadpool 2 would be called The Deadpool Before Christmas, playing on the fact that it was coming out during the holiday season. However, that has officially been debunked, and instead, Once Upon a Deadpool is playing on the fairytale angle, which is great and appropriate considering that it's using a framing device parodying The Princess Bride, adult Fred Savage included. Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick conceived the sequence and shot it in just one day.

This title wasn't the only thing revealed about Deadpool 2's return to theaters. For those of you interested in checking out Once Upon a Deadpool, it will have a "limited engagement" on the big screen starting December 12 and end on Christmas Eve. Although this Princess Bride sequence provides extra incentive for people who already saw Deadpool 2 to check out this new cut, most of Once Upon a Deadpool is footage cut from the original movie to meet PG-13 standards. Once Upon a Deadpool ends up being three minutes shorter than the theatrical cut of Deadpool 2, although 20th Century Fox didn't comment about how much of the new runtime is new footage.

There's also a charitable component to Once Upon a Deadpool, as some of the movie's proceeds will be donated to a noble cause. As Ryan Reynolds told Deadline:

Because it's the season of giving, we will also be giving $1 for every ticket sold to Fuck Cancer, which will be renamed Fudge Cancer just for this limited time and campaign.

While the idea of a PG-13 Deadpool 2 still sounds strange given how the original cut and the first Deadpool movie are packed with profanity, raunchy material and excessive violence, this should nonetheless prove to be an interesting experiment. That Princess Bride aspect at least brings something new to the table, and it's commendable that some of its box office haul will be sent to Fudge Cancer (remember, the charity won't be permanently called that).

Ryan Reynolds also added that while he initially wasn't fond of the idea of a PG-13 Deadpool movie that Fox kept pitching him, he finally agreed to it, but with some stipulations. As Reynolds put it:

Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006. I've said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said 'Yes' on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining...

Playing along with the gag, Fred Savage said in a separate statement that while his participation in Once Upon a Deadpool was "anything but voluntary," he's glad that Fudge Cancer will be reaping the benefits of this "shameless cash grab."

Like its predecessor, the original Deadpool 2 proved itself to be a huge commercial success, making over $734 million worldwide. However, as noted in Deadline's report, this was the only Fox release to crack the Top 30 this year. Once Upon a Deadpool provides the opportunity to not only score some extra cash, but also be used as the franchises' "first viable play" in China, which has become an increasingly important movie market.

There's also the Disney of it all to consider. The Mouse House's acquisition of Fox is set to go into effect in early 2019, and once that's done, then the X-Men and Fantastic Four properties can be absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Supposedly the Marvel and Disney leadership are watching how Once Upon a Deadpool performs. If it does particularly well, that may factor into their plans for the Merc with the Mouth.

On the movies side of things, the MCU has always stuck in PG-13 territory, and there's no sign of that changing anytime soon. Last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger said there might be an opportunity to create a "Marvel-R-brand" so characters like Deadpool who are handled with a more mature hand wouldn't be affected once they're with Marvel Studios. However, maybe that plan will be tossed out if Once Upon a Deadpool is a hit, and Wade Wilson subsequently becomes a protagonist that older kids/teens can watch in theaters without a parent or guardian accompanying them.

It's also worth mentioning that Once Upon a Deadpool is coming in a particularly crowded December. Two days after it drops, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Mortal Engines are coming out, and the next week marks the release of Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman and Bumblebee, among others. With all that competition, it's hard to say just how many people will turn out to see Once Upon a Deadpool when there's so much new content available.

In any case, if you're looking to enjoy Deadpool back on the big screen again or want to indulge the young'uns who weren't able to watch the first two Deadpool releases in theaters, Once Upon a Deadpool will be around for less than two weeks. You probably won't get much in the way of holiday cheer, but if the filmmakers did a good job putting this cut together for a more family-friendly audience, there will still be plenty of laughs.

Again, Once Upon a Deadpool will screen over a 12-day period starting December 12.
