Kevin Smith Finds A Very Funny Connection Between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker And Affleck's Batman

Yesterday we got our first official look at Joaquin Phoenix in character for Todd Phillip's upcoming standalone Joker film. Because Joker is an origin story, we will see the character's transformation from a (presumably) regular person into the Clown Prince of Crime. This first image shows the man before that transformation, a man named Arthur Fleck. On its face, that name doesn't mean much, but filmmaker and noted Batman fan, Kevin Smith has spotted a funny connection between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and the actor who plays the Joker's nemesis in the DCEU, Ben Affleck. Take a look:

That's pretty funny. It's almost too coincidental. What is his middle name, 'Martha?' Maybe Joker writer-director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scott Silver are just trolling everyone, using the name of Joaquin Phoenix's failed comedian to deliver some meta-humor referencing the character's greatest foe in WB's separate DCEU films. Although, if Batman and the Joker really are two sides of the same coin, it would make sense that we see them reflected in each other in different ways, even if this film takes place in a separate universe. Of course, this is all probably just coincidence and the name Arthur Fleck was chosen for other reasons that have more to do with the character Joaquin Phoenix is playing before he sheds that moniker and becomes the Joker. But this coincidence will bring a deluge of 'Sad Affleck' memes nonetheless.

With Joker being divorced from the DCEU, this film will presumably have a lot of freedom to do things differently and put a spin on the character we haven't seen before, as well as inserting little connections and Easter eggs like this (even if this wasn't intentional). It's funny that Kevin Smith picked up on this, considering that he is a huge comic book fan who has collaborated with Ben Affleck multiple times in the past and is a defender of his Batman portrayal. Speaking of that portrayal, Ben Affleck is still Batman at the moment, but it remains to be seen if that holds true in Matt Reeves' Batman film. With the DCEU coming apart at the seams, maybe he could just hop in to Joker to give the actor one more opportunity with the character.

That said, much of Joker is still a mystery. Beyond the broad strokes of Arthur Fleck being a failed comedian living in New York City, we don't really know much about the film. And although I think everyone is expecting to see Arthur Fleck fully transform into a bleached skinned, green haired villain, we don't know if the story will show him coming in to contact with who will be his eternal enemy, Batman.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Frances Conroy, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. Joker is now filming and is scheduled to open in theaters on October 4, 2019. How Much Time Has Passed Between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War

This morning was a wild one for hardcore Marvel fans. The studio released the latest trailer for the Russo Brothers' highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, which teased the high stakes ride that fans will go on next month. The movie is the product of ten years of filmmaking, and will feature all the major characters from the shared universe. But there is one aspect of the MCU that is always a bit confusing: the overall timeline. Luckily we won't have to be puzzled by wondering what year it is during Infinity War. The Russo Brothers revealed to CinemaBlend where the upcoming blockbuster sits on the timeline, specifically how long its been since the events of Captain America: Civil War. As Joe Russo tells it:

It'll be roughly two years.

It looks like The Avengers have had some serious time to digest their choices from Civil War, which should make for a fantastic dynamic once Thanos' invasion forces the group back together. Let's break down all the possibilities this opens up for storytelling.

Joe Russo cleared up the timeline during CinemaBlend's visit to the set of Infinity War in Atlanta. It looks like our favorite group of heroes has had two long years to think about their actions, which should make for some fascinating exposition and interactions. This means that Iron Man and his scrappy team of Vision and War Machine probably have been doing all of the crime fighting, since Cap's team are all fugitives on the run and Peter Parker turned him down. Rhodes has been given two full years to recover from the injuries sustained during the epic airport battle, which explains why he's up and running in the footage for Infinity War.

For Team Captain America, the two year gap may have even graver consequences. This means they basically had to be on the run for the entirety of the gap, which probably wasn't easy and likely has implications for the characters' personal lives. Paul Rudd's Scott Lang presumably had to spend some time away from her daughter, after escaping The Raft with the rest of the crew. Scarlet Witch's life was one again uprooted, and she probably misses Vision greatly. It's also unclear how it all affected Hawkeye, who has been noticeably absent from Infinity War's marketing material.

Two years of resentment has likely been brewing for all of The Avengers, which should make their reunion an interesting one. Tony Stark will have to make amends with Steve Rogers, while also dealing with his feelings toward Bucky (who is now cured from his mind control thanks to Black Panther's Shuri). Add in the likes of Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy, and we're in for a wild mixture of personalities and powers.

Teen Titans GO! To The Movies Can't Stop Teasing Deadpool

Deadpool was already a Marvel Comics fan favorite for years before his solo movie debuted, but thanks to Ryan Reynolds' portrayal, the Merc with the Mouth's popularity has significantly increased over the last few years. Meanwhile, over at DC Comics, there's a character who looks an awful lot like Deadpool, though their personalities couldn't be any more different: Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke. While Slade has clashed with numerous DC heroes over the years, he's arguably best known for being a Teen Titans villain, and with him serving as the main villain in Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, the marketing for the movie has been poking fun at his similarities to Deadpool, most recently with a text message conversation, as seen below.

Here's a little background for those of you unfamiliar with comic book history. Deathstroke was introduced in 1980, and 11 years later, Deadpool was designed to resemble Deathstroke. He was even given a similar name: Wade Wilson. Since then, Deadpool has carved out his own path with his fourth wall-breaking antics, but Teen Titans GO! To the Movies can't help but reference him in relation to Deathstroke, who's known simply as Slade in this movie. In the trailer that premiered last month, we saw Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg immediately assumed it was Deadpool they were dealing with, prompting Slade to wisely point out that he was the one who came out first.

Unfortunately for Slade, it's in one ear and out the other with the Teen Titans, or maybe they're just trolling him in the above text message conversation from Twitter. Regardless, Slade isn't going to get any respect from these young'uns. But while the animated version of Deathstroke suffers through these Deadpool jabs, Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke from the DC Extended Universe has his own movie in development, so it isn't all bad news for the character. As for Deadpool, his sequel adventure came out a few weeks ago and has performed incredibly critically and commercially. Just don't expect this R-rated version of the character to ever pop up in an all-ages animated movie... ever.

Keeping the comedic tone seen in the Teen Titans GO! TV series, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies sees Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg setting out to find a director for their movie. Upon learning that no one takes them seriously, the team of young heroes uses their conflict with Slade as an opportunity to prove that they're worthy of a movie. Along with the main voice cast from the TV series reprising their respective roles, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies' cast includes Will Arnett as Slade, Kristen Bell as Jade Wilson, Nicolas Cage as Superman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, Halsey as Wonder Woman and Lil Yachty as Green Lantern.

While the first trailer for Ralph Breaks The Internet was released all the way back in February, and another came out this summer, they didn't exactly provide a lot of story context. We learned that Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) were going to be visiting the internet and getting into a variety of shenanigans, but the preview didn't explain what the film was actually going to be about. As a result, the mystery has persisted for months, but now the story at the heart of the Wreck-It Ralph sequel.

A few weeks back I attended a special press day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California for an inside look at the making of Ralph Breaks The Internet, and it was through a variety of presentations and interviews that I learned the central plot of the new movie. It picks up where the last one left off, with Ralph and Vanellope living comfortably and harmoniously in their respective games -- Fix It Felix and Sugar Rush -- but everything changes when the arcade owner, Mr. Litwak (Ed O'Neill), plugs in a Wi-Fi router. At first the device is deemed totally off limits for all game characters, but we all know that won't really stop our heroes... especially in a time of crisis.

That time of crisis is specifically comes thanks to an incident with the Sugar Rush cabinet, as an over-excited player accidentally breaks one of the steering wheels. Because the manufacturer no longer exists, the only replacement available online costs more than the game makes in a year, Mr. Litwak is forced to make the terrible decision to unplug it. As a result, Vanellope is left homeless, but Ralph is determined to help her, and believes that the answer to their problems rests on the internet -- specifically on the website eBay.

After sneaking into the router and being transported to the World Wide Web -- awed by it's incredible and expansive majesty -- a Search Bar takes them to eBay where they find the auction for the Sugar Rush steering wheel (which is amidst items such as a portrait of a sad kitten and a potato chip shaped like Beyonc). Unfortunately, they don't actually understand how an auction works, and think that it's just a race to say a higher number than the other bidders. As a result, they wind up winning, but owing a handsome sum of $27,001. Ralph and Vanellope learn about this serious mistake, and are told that they have 24 hours to complete the purchase or forfeit the item.

Needing to earn a crazy amount of money quickly, the heroes come into contact with Yesss (Taraji P. Henson) -- the algorithm that exists behind the trendiest website online, BuzzTube. She tells them that the best way to make money on the internet is through the creation of a viral video, and while that puts the characters on a positive path, it's also one full of landmines for Ralph, given how he validates himself through other people.

Ralph Breaks The Internet is described by directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston as a road film that will take Ralph and Vanellope into all aspects of the online experience -- so what's above is really only the set up for the larger story and larger world that the movie is building. It's incredibly exciting -- particularly for those of us who love Wreck-It Ralph -- and we'll have a lot more for you about the new Disney animated film in the weeks and months ahead.
