How John Wick 3 Set Up A Possible Spinoff

How John Wick 3 Set Up A Possible Spinoff

Very minor John Wick 3 spoilers ahead. Don't shoot the messenger.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum just had a -- wait for it -- killer opening weekend at the box office. That's important for world-building reasons. It not only makes another sequel more likely, it bodes well for The Continental TV series that's still in development at Starz and the spinoff movie that was discussed two years ago.

Do you remember that spinoff movie?

Back in 2017, it was announced that the John Wick franchise might be getting a spinoff movie called Ballerina. The script was being written by Shay Hatten, who is also credited as one of the writers of Parabellum. The story was said to follow a young woman raised as an assassin who must hunt down the other assassins that murdered her family. It was described, at the time, as being akin to La Femme Nikita, but with a "more pulpy, hyper-stylized bent a la Quentin Tarantino or Matthew Vaughn."

That was then. Fast-forward to 2019 and John Wick 3 just introduced Anjelica Huston as The Director, who also runs an academy that turns ballerinas into assassins. Putting two and two together, THR asked director Chad Stahelski if it was safe to say her introduction set up the Ballerina spinoff. Here's Stahelski's reply:

I think if you read Shays script and you look into the characters in that, youd find your answer.

Not having seen Shay Hatten's script, it still seems pretty safe to say the answer is "yes." A lot can happen in two years to change a story, but the franchise-best box office success of John Wick 3 -- not to mention approval from both critics and fans -- suggests this spinoff has a great chance of moving forward. There are plenty of questions on how it would play out, including whether Anjelica Huston would be a main star and if Keanu Reeves would cameo at all. But we can add it to the list of spinoff/sequels from here.

(For the record, that long-gestating TV spinoff set at the L.A. Continental hotel is meant to have at least a Keanu Reeves cameo, and possibly a voice-over from Winston actor Ian McShane.)

John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski also talked to THR about the third chapter sharing more background on Jonathan's own origin story. In a section of his answer, he also touched on things that might be relevant to the Ballerina spinoff:

... As far as backstory goes, everything you need to know about John is in Parabellum. We hid it very well and hopefully, youll watch this movie three or four times. You may not care, and if you do care, when you watch The Directors scenes and you see the girls, and you put two and two together with the tattoos and the crucifixes, the kind of martial arts he does, who he talks to, what languages he speaks, you can piece together a fairly comprehensive background on where John came from and what his upbringing was like. I give the audience a lot of credit; hopefully, they can piece it together and they like piecing it together. Its like a book; thats why we numbered the movies as chapters...

Speaking of chapters, John Wick: Chapter 3 ended on a note that has fans curious about John Wick: Chapter 4. If you want spoilers, check out our breakdown of the Parabellum ending and start imagining what might be next in Keanu Reeves' movie, plus the movie and TV spinoffs. Let's just hope this doesn't turn into -- wait for it again -- overkill.

Solo: A Star Wars Storys Co-Writer Reveals How Chris Miller And Phil Lord Contributed To The Movie

Following the behind-the-scenes shake-up on Solo: A Star Wars Story the film changed directors and went through a lot of reshoots, so how much of the movie was actually the work of the original directors? it's a question that a lot of Star Wars fans have been asking and, one that nobody appears to be very interested in answering. However, a recent information dump from Solo co-writer Jon Kasdan reveals quite a few details about the final product that were apparently the work of Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The first major influence that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (referred throughout Jon Kasdan Twitter thread as C&P for Chris and Phil) had on Solo: A Star Wars Story was on the character of Lady Proxima (referred to by Kasdan as Mother Proxima, showing another way the character changed). She's part of a group called the White Worms in the script but in the original draft they're described as "well dressed, vampiric, albino aliens" it was apparently Lord and Miller that turned the White Worms into actual worms.

Another addition to the script from Lord and Miller was the speeder chase that sees Han and Qi'ra attempt to escape Corellia. Apparently, the chase simply wasn't in the script originally, but Lord and Miller felt that the audience needed to see Han be a pilot and show off his skill early in the movie. If the speeder chase hadn't been there then we wouldn't have seen Han fly anything until he took over the Millennium Falcon near the end of the film. Needless to say, that would have been too long to wait.

If you liked the way Chewbacca was introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story, you can thank the original directors as they apparently had the idea to make Chewie "the beast" and they even created the aesthetic, making the cage fight a massive mud pit. They also devised how the fight would end, with Han speaking in Chewie's language at a key moment.

Lord and Miller were also largely responsible for the look of The Lodge at Fort Ypso, the gambling den where Han and Qi'ra find Lando. They were apparently inspired by Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller for the look of the location.

One of the more interesting new characters introduced in Solo: A Star Wars Story was Lando's co-pilot, the droid L3-37. Jonathan Kasdan reveals that the creation of the character came about through conversations he, and his co-writer, father Lawrence Kasdan, had with Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Specifically, the character came from Chris Miller pointing out the oddness of the fact that the Mos Eisley bartender throws out R2-D2 and C-3PO, something Miller thought was odd since droids would generally be considered the most well-behaved patrons a cantina could have.

The scene between Han and Qi'ra in Lando's cape closet on the Falcon was an idea of Lord and Miller that was specifically designed to remind the audience of a similar scene between Han and Leia in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Kasdan also credits Lord and Miller, along with Solo casting director Nina Gold, for finding Erin Kellyman, the actress who plays Enfys Nest. They were, of course, also responsible for selecting Alden Ehrenreich himself as Han Solo.

Interestingly, Jon Kasdan also calls out Lord and Miller for two items that you won't see in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The first involved a creature Lord and Miller came up with called a Wopota, which was some sort of elephant-like animal that was being used in the Kessel mines. It apparently had a drill strapped to its face for making new tunnels, and during the prison break, the creature gets loose and chases Han and Chewie through the tunnels. Kasdan wishes the scene had been filmed, it apparently had some great banter, but it was ultimately deemed too expensive.

The second sequence that you don't see in Solo is a stop off on a random planet during the Kessel Run that would have been full of massive terrifying alien creatures. It was here where the alien in space the Falcon must escape from in the final cut was originally found. Lord and Miller apparently nixed this scene themselves, feeling the stopover would kill the momentum of the escape. In this case, Kasdan agrees this was the right move.

And so, while Phil Lord and Chris Miller may not have completed the responsibilities of directing Solo: A Star Wars Story, it's clear that the final product still owes them a great debt, as they did help create much of what we see on screen. It's unclear how much of what they created they actually filmed, we may never know that, but Ron Howard certainly used a lot of the work they did.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is now available in Digital format and will hit Blu-ray September 25.

Captain Marvel Almost Had A Different Final Shot

Captain Marvel Almost Had A Different Final Shot

Spoilers ahead for Carol Danvers' origin story.

Captain Marvel has been in theaters for a week, and a mass of moviegoers have headed to theaters to meet Carol Danvers for the very first time. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's blockbuster was a long time coming, as development and Brie Larson's casting happened many years before she finally hit theaters. But the movie is going faster, higher, further at the box office, with the title character also popping up in the final Avengers: Endgame trailer.

Marvel fans and cinephiles are already dissecting every frame of Captain Marvel, eager for an indication of the character's future, and her crossover in Endgame. And it turns out, the film's ending was changed quite a bit before hitting theaters. Marvel editor Debbie Berman previously worked on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Black Panther before turning her talents toward Captain Marvel. Berman recently revealed the original ending for the film, saying:

I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film. It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring. Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years. So we added Talos and his family in their spaceship waiting for her, and they all fly off together. It gave her more of a sense of purpose and made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about, and for a more specific mission. It gave more resonance and closure to her final moment in the film.

That's quite the change, and it sounds like the folks involved with Captain Marvel ultimately made the right choice. Carol Danvers left her solo movie with a mission, possibly explaining her long absence until Avengers: Endgame.

Debbie Berman's comments to ET show how collaborative things appeared to be on Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Marvel debut. Editors are an extremely important aspect of the filmmaking process, and Marvel Studios appears to be a place that really internalizes critiques, and is always attempting to improve.

Captain Marvel surprise audiences with its handling of the Kree/Skrull war, especially the latter shapeshifting aliens. While the trailers and comics set the Skrull up to be villains, they were revealed to be sympathetic refugees trying to flee from the Kree. Carol ultimately realizes the truth, and vows to help the Skrull find a home, while also sending Yon-Rogg back with a warning to The Supreme Intelligence. The ending solidified her relationship with Ben Mendelsohn's Talos, rather than Captain Marvel flying into space as a lone wolf.

You can catch Captain Marvel's ending in theaters now, and the character will return to the MCU when Avengers: Endgame arrives on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why Ant-Man And The Wasp Chose That Second Post-Credits Scene

Why Ant-Man And The Wasp Chose That Second Post-Credits Scene

Warning: SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp are ahead!

After keeping its main story fairly self-contained, Ant-Man and the Wasp used its mid-credits scene to tie into Avengers: Infinity War. As Scott Lang was in the Quantum Realm, Hank Pym, Hope van Dyne and Janet van Dyne were dusted away by the Thanos snap, leaving Scott trapped in that other reality. Ant-Man and the Wasp could have left things there, but it would't feel like a Marvel Cinematic Universe installment without a scene being tacked on after the credits finished rolling, and in this case, we saw the giant ant covered for Scott during his house arrest going about its business while the world was going to hell. As for why Ant-Man and the Wasp chose to end things on that note, director Peyton Reed attributed it to wanting the post-credits scene to match the movie's lighter tone. In his words:

Well, I felt like it maybe leavened the drama of the events of Infinity War a little bit, and also we liked the idea that this ant - that Hank and Hope had set up as a decoy for Scott when he's [under] house arrest and had programmed to do what Scott did all day long - that maybe if the ant got enough of this, it might start to like hanging out at Scott's apartment. And maybe it likes playing the drums, and maybe is still staying and playing the drums. It just made us laugh. It seemed like the tone of our movie. The way the tone of our movie would deal with the events of Infinity War.

Given that Avengers: Infinity War was released just two months before Ant-Man and the Wasp, it was expected that the latter movie would somehow call back to the former. Still, like its predecessor, Ant-Man and the Wasp is one of the more lighthearted movies in the MCU, so to go from that to seeing Hank, Hope and Janet disappear alongside half of all other life forms in the universe is a major tonal shift. So as not to end on too much of a downer note, as Peyton Reed informed HuffPost, showing the giant ant playing drums as TV signals were going out and the world was generally going to hell is one way to give the audiences a last chuckle or smirk. At least we can take comfort knowing that Antony Jr. (or whatever its name is) was part of the half of the universe that wasn't erased by a certain purple-skinned Mad Titan.

Avengers: Infinity War marked the beginning of the end for the MCU's Phase 3, and while Ant-Man and the Wasp's main events took place before Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy and other assorted superheroes faced off against Thanos and his minions, the sequel still found a way to connect to that devastating twist. We already know that Scott will somehow escape the Quantum Realm and be present for Avengers 4, but like nearly everything else about that movie, his exact role remains a mystery. It's also been rumored that an older Cassie Lang will appear in Avengers 4, meaning that Scott's daughter was also lucky enough to make it out of Infinity War intact.

Be sure to read CinemaBlend's review and To 3D guide for Ant-Man and the Wasp, and check out our 2018 release schedule to learn what other movies come out later this year. The MCU will pick back up next year with the release of Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019.
