Black Panther Toyed With A Different Romantic Lead For The Hero
In Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia is the target of the titular hero's romantic affections -- but that wasn't always the case. Like any blockbuster film, the project's script went through many changes as it made its way through development, and according to co-writer Joe Robert Cole there was a point when the Marvel Comics character Monica Lynne was included in the story. While he couldn't quite pin the name, he recently explained,
There might have been a few characters that we early on thought about incorporating... I'm spacing on the name of it. We thought about a different love interest for Panther at one point very early on... She's the singer. There was a different love interest from the canon that we thought about. It was just a part of a conversation. But we ultimately ended up not playing with that character.
Joe Robert Cole couldn't come up with a name on the spot, but research into Black Panther's past for singers that he dated reveal that he was referencing Monica Lynne -- a romantic interest for T'Challa introduced to Marvel Comics back in 1970. I had asked Cole about characters that they thought about including in the script that didn't make cut, and while it doesn't sound like there were multiple drafts featuring Monica Lynne, her first live-action appearance was apparently on the table for a minute.
T'Challa first met Monica Lynne in Avengers #73, saving her from an attack by a gang known as the Sons of the Serpent. She is an American jazz singer who eventually became Black Panther's fianc, but their engagement was eventually broken off. Considering the fact that the film doesn't actually have any scenes with T'Challa in America, creating that relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe probably would have resulted in a very different film than the one we got. Considering the quality of the final product, and the wonderful chemistry between Lupita Nyong'o and Chadwick Boseman, it seems like they ultimately made the proper choice.
Obviously Black Panther couldn't squeeze absolutely every major character from the comics into the debut solo film, but the good news is that there will be plenty more chances to introduce them in the future. The success of Ryan Coogler's film means that we will probably continue to see many Black Panther movies made in the future, and each of them will provide the chance for key figures. Hell, Coogler might even be able to find space to include Patriot.

Once Upon A Deadpool Promotion Has Offended Some Members Of The Mormon Church
The new Deadpool may be more family-friendly, but that doesn't mean that he has become entirely inoffensive. A petition is online which has asked that one of the posters for Once Upon a Deadpool be pulled, as it constitutes religious discrimination. The poster sees Deadpool at the center of the image and dressed all in white. He's surrounded by characters from the film who look like angels. Check it out below.
The problem, according to the Change.org petition, is that the image for the Once Upon a Deadpool poster is based on a sacred picture to the Church of Latter-Day Saints, entitled The Second Coming. Deadpool has taken the place of Jesus Christ in the image, which the petition claims mocks the church, and the petition asks that the film stop using this poster and find something different to promote the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2.
Unfortunately, as written, the new petition isn't going to carry much weight, as it's directed to the wrong place. Change.org petitions need to be sent "to" a person or other entity and clearly, the person who created this one only did minimal research on the Deadpool franchise. This petition is being directed at Tim Miller, who was the director of the original Deadpool but left Deadpool 2 early in production, to be replaced by David Leitch.
Errors in attribution notwithstanding, the petition does have some support, as it has received over 36,000 signatures as of this writing. It's not the massively overwhelming support that many movie based petitions have received, but it's certainly a significant number of people.
Of course, while Once Upon a Deadpool might be a PG-13 version of the movie, the film is still a Deadpool movie. It's not like everybody involved didn't know what they were doing when they chose that particular religious image as the basis for the poster. Is it potentially offensive? Sure it is, but that was obviously the point. There were even rumors before the release of Deadpool 2 that the film was going to be subtitled The Second Coming, so it's possible the studio has had this poster idea kicking around for a while, and just decided that it made sense to use it for the Christmas time release of Once Upon a Deadpool.
Of course, due to the fact that Once Upon a Deadpool has already been released in theaters, it's unlikely that this petition will have any effect on anything. It could convince the studio to not use the image as the cover for the eventual Blu-ray release, but, honestly, the other Once Upon a Deadpool poster, which features Fred Savage and Deadpool astride Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, is a better image for that anyway. Any official response from the filmmakers or the studio seems unlikely, but we'll have to wait and see.

Justice League Apparently Had A Batman 66 Easter Egg
Zack Snyder's Justice League features an absolutely insane number of Easter eggs and deep cuts referring to the various corners of the DC lore. It is the type of film that requires multiple viewings to catch everything, and some viewers are still finding new nuggets of DC trivia with every watch. In fact, some eagle-eyed fans have finally noticed a significant nod to the Batman '66 series from the 1960s starring the late Adam West. Take a look at the Bat-tastic reference to the beloved red phone, below.
It's an incredibly quick moment, but easy to understand once the average Bat-fan actually finds it. That shot is of the phone used by Bruce Wayne's informant at Iron Heights prison when Barry Allen goes to visit his wrongfully-incarcerated father. The correctional officer presses a button on his phone to signal Batman, and the phone on the screen turns red as it dials The Caped Crusader. Though we cannot officially confirm that it is a nod to Batman '66, the general understanding of the Reddit user who posted the image seems to be that it's a nod to the same red phone used by Adam West's Batman back during the character's campy days on the small screen.
As fans of the old series will recall, the red phone became a constant fixture during Adam West's tenure. It was used as a direct line between Batman and Commissioner Gordon -- although, as you can see from the clip below, Alfred Pennyworth also used the device at times when Bruce Wayne was not around to answer the call.
This red phone Easter egg represents one of many deep cuts to the DC world that the folks at Warner Bros. managed to pack into Justice League's lean two-hour runtime. Beyond the telephone, the movie also featured nods to the Legion of Doom, The Atom, Black Mask, and many more. Now that Justice League has finally debuted its home release, it seems likely that fans will soon start to find even more Easter eggs that they may not have noticed during the film's theatrical run.
