MoviePass Unveils New Plan That Keeps Costs Down, But Makes Major Changes

MoviePass has been seriously struggling recently and in an attempt to stop the bleeding had announced a number of changes to the subscription service, including an increase in the monthly cost to $14.95 and the blacking out of major new releases for a period of two weeks. Today, in response to user outcry, MoviePass has announced a change to their changes. The movie ticket subscription service will now be keeping its monthly cost at $9.95, but will begin to limit users to seeing three movies a month for that price. For users who want to see more movies, a discount of up to $5 per ticket will be offered. According to MoviePass, only about 15% of users see more than three movies in a month, so the vast majority should be unaffected, but since that 15% had been a major financial issue for the service, MoviePass should remain sustainable going forward. As is true with any new company, we've evolved to accommodate what has become an unprecedented phenomenon. We are now creating a framework to provide the vast majority of subscribers with what they want most -- low cost, value, variety, and broad availability -- and to bring some moderation to the small number of subscribers who imposed undue cost on the system by viewing a disproportionately large number of movies. We believe this new plan is a way for us to move forward with stability and continue to revitalize an entrenched industry and return moviegoing to everyone's financial reach.

From the day that MoviePass dropped its monthly subscription price to $9.95 a month a lot of people were curious. Considering that even a single movie ticket costs more than that in many markets, it didn't seem feasible that users could see one movie a day and allow MoviePass to survive. It's now clear that it wasn't feasible at all.

In addition to keeping the price point the same, but reducing the number of movies one can see in a month, MoviePass also announced it is ending its peak pricing policy, which saw a surcharge added on top of some screenings if they were deemed too popular, and the company also says that "many major studio first-run films" will be offered, implying that the two-week blackout will also be ending in most cases, though the use of the word "many" rather than "all" makes it sound like it may not be gone entirely.

If it's true that 85% of MoviePass users don't see more than three movies in a month, then the vast majority of users will be happy with this news, as it sounds like it will mostly return MoviePass to the product that it was right after the price drop. For the rest, the $5 discount might be enough to make it worth keeping the service and seeing a bunch of movies, it won't be as cheap as it was, but it will still be a lot cheaper than it could be.

Dark Phoenixs Alexandra Shipp Doesnt Want A Storm And Black Panther Romance In The MCU

Since the Disney-Fox merger finally became official as of a couple weeks ago, the mutants of X-Men could join the ranks of the MCU someday. Among the many potential pairings that have been suggested among fans between Avengers and X-Men is the striking romance between Black Panther and Storm but according to Dark Phoenixs Storm actress, Alexandra Shipp, just because Disney can now make this happen, it doesnt mean they should. In her words:

No! No, I dont think Storm needs TChalla, and I think she needs her own movie! It doesnt have to be me, it just needs to be made. A woman does not need a man in order to give her validity and she has also been around longer than him.

Looks like Chadwick Boseman TChalla is getting the cold shoulder from the X-Men actress, but for a valid, industry-forward reason. During a roundtable interview at WonderCon (via LRM Online,) Alexandra Shipp showed her distaste with her characters future plotline to revolve around a romance between Storm and Black Panther because she thinks the weather-controlling hero needs her own movie. Though it should be noted that Black Panther has been around since 1966, and Storm debuted on the printed page nine years later.

Its a tiresome plotline for the women of Marvel Comics to be consistently defined as the men in their lives, one that Captain Marvel recently made a conscience effort to steer away from. Alexandra Shipp previously echoed this statement last year when asked about her ideas for a spinoff for the powerful mutant character with these comments:

I just want there to be a message of this woman doesnt need a man. Just one movie where a woman doesnt need a man, really.

However, with a the addition of the X-Men to the MCU imminent, TChalla and Ororos romance would be an intriguing way for the two teams to intersect and form an alliance. In the comic books, the two meet as children when Storm flees Cairo following her parents deaths and comes across Wakanda. Storm rescues TChalla from being kidnapped and a love story ignites. When they are older, the pair get married with both the X-Men and Avengers in attendance though its a short-lived union.

Six years into it, they were put at odds for the Avengers vs. X-Men event. When her team of mutants do damage to Wakanda, Black Panther blames her for it and they get a divorce. Seeing some of this drama play out would certainly be interesting as the hero becomes more prevalent in the MCU and the possibility of the addition of X-Men in the MCU will likely be tinkered with.

Us Evan Alex even recently volunteered himself up to play the son of Black Panther and Ororo in a Black Panther sequel to Vulture after playing the son to Black Panthers MBaku, Winston Duke, in the Jordan Peele horror film. To Alexandra Shipp, Storms addition to the MCU would just place her even farther into the background then she already is in the current X-Men franchise. Heres what she said:

I would and I wouldnt (like it), because Storm barely has anything to say as it is. I dont know about you all (other actors) but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we werent piled into yet another jam packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like fucking sasquatch.

The actress certainly isnt afraid to tell it like it is but shes right. As is, the upcoming Avengers: Endgame film looks so packed with characters that some will likely have one or two lines. Add in a crew of mutants and there would be so many heroes on the big screen that there just wouldnt be a way to do each of the characters justice.

At WonderCon, 20 minutes of X-Men: Dark Phoenix footage was also showcased ahead of the films release on June 7. What do you think about Alexandra Shipps comments?
