Does The Flashpoint Movie Have Directors Or Not?
The DCEU's solo Flash (Ezra Miller) movie has seen an insane number of ups and downs over the last few years as several directors cycled in and out of the project. That said, things seemed to stabilize when we learned of the plan to bring Spider-Man: Homecoming scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein on board to direct the project. However, things aren't set in stone yet, as it looks like neither filmmaker has officially signed on the dotted line for the film. Opening up about the status of Flashpoint at the premiere of Game Night, Daley explained:
We're still negotiating. Deals are in the works right now.
Just when we thought things had started to move forward in the Flashpoint world, we get this news. The duo has been approached by DC to take the job, but a deal has yet to actually be finalized. Of course, it's worth mentioning that this doesn't mean John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are out on the gig; they will hopefully eventually sign on and become official members of the DCEU crew. However, what is does say is they are not as confirmed for the project as previous reports had led us to believe.
Despite the potential setback, it sounds like things aren't too intense right now. Elsewhere in John Francis Daley's comments to THR about the situation, he made a crack about the slow negotiations revolving around a dispute over parking spots and that "hopefully, it will work out."
If John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein end up not signing on for Flashpoint, then it might be time to start once again worrying about the Flash movie. Based on the original plan for the DCEU, The Flash's film was supposed to debut on March 16, 2018. However, issues with keeping directors, including Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's Seth Grahame-Smith and Dope's Rick Famuyiwa, kept pushing the film further and further back. Recent reports have suggested that Flashpoint is still a priority for the folks at DC, but Daley's comments about the situation appear to signal that things haven't been locked in place yet.
As many fans likely already know, Flashpoint is a big deal for DC and the DCEU. It's one of the most iconic comic book stories in recent memory, and it involves practically the entire Justice League ensemble as it follows Barry Allen to an alternate version of Earth in which he chose to save his mother from her death at the hands of Reverse-Flash. Beyond that, however, Flashpoint is also critical because its use of time travel to alter reality gives DC a mulligan if it ever wants to reboot its cinematic universe.
Flashpoint does not have a set release date yet, but we will bring you more updates related to the project as they become available. As for this year, you can catch the latest DCEU offering when James Wan's Aquaman premieres on the big screen on December 21.
