Tom Hiddleston Finally Confronts The Marvel Fan Theory That Loki Faked His Own Death
No one ever really dies in comic book movies. Sure, it looks like characters such as Superman or Wolverine or half of the MCU have died on screen, but they usually find some way to be brought back. And now Marvel fans are tossing around a rumor -- to Tom Hiddleston, actually -- that Loki might not have died in Avengers: Infinity War after all.
Let's recount. In the opening scenes of Joe and Anthony Russo's summer blockbuster, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) meets his maker at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Mad Titan. Only, during ACE Comic Con in Chicago, Hiddleston told crowds (via ComicBook) that he is hearing fan theories that he might have faked his own death, for these specific reasons. Says Hiddleston:
Listen... I've heard some amazing theories about this. I was in a park in London a couple of weeks ago, and some guys came and said hi, and they asked me the same question. They said, 'Hey, listen, we need an answer to this question. All the other times Loki's died' --- there's been a few --- 'he stabs with his right hand. And now he's stabbing with his left hand.' I was like, 'That's incredible attention to detail.'
The stabbing motion is in reference to the lunge that Loki makes at Thanos' throat. Die-hard fans have picked up on the fact that God of Mischief is using his left hand, where in movies past, Loki tends to attack with his right. The suspicious activity looks like this:
That comment led us down a wormhole of MCU theories that actually suggest that if you were to look in the background of this scene, you would see a shadow of what appears to be Loki looking in on Thanos killing Loki. I'd screengrab it for you, but it's really such a shadowy mirage, it doesn't show anything.
But the "Loki lives" rumors really stem from the fact that we have seen the character fake his own death multiple times before. And he has projected himself as both Loki, and as other characters, in past Marvel movies. So the idea that he tricked Thanos isn't that unconventional.
Also, this explains Loki's last line to his brother, Thor, about the sun shining on them again one day. Could that still happen, possibly in Avengers 4, as the heroes work to reverse whatever it is Thanos' accomplished?
Tom Hiddleston's not revealing anything. When pressed on the matter by a fan, he replied:
Your guess is as good a mine.
But that's not true! Tom's guess would be MUCH better than any fan's guess, because he knows if he has filmed any more scenes as Loki in the MCU. The god of mischief, and of lies.
Even if this is the end of Loki on the big screen, it's being reported that Tom Hiddleston could return to play Loki on the new Disney streaming service, in an original limited series. Could it be set after Avengers 4, with a resurrected Loki? Or is it a prequel, told long before Loki sacrificed himself to try and stop Thanos? Time will tell.
Three comic book companies are being represented on the big screen in April: Shazam! for DC, Hellboy for Dark Horse and Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. All three of these movies have wildly different stories and, to a lesser extent, tones, so at least moviegoers won't be getting one rehash after another.
